The small town of Huxley is located just 11 miles south of Ames. This picturesque community is steadily growing as more people discover the charm of Huxley. Enjoy the annual Huxley Prairie Festival where you can check out local vendors, food and drinks, entertainment and more. The town is served by the Ballard Community School District. LIVING IN MADRID

The town of Madrid was originally established in the 1840s as a coal mining and farming community and today is the oldest continuously inhabited Swedish settlement west of the Mississippi River. Locals enjoy access to High Trestle Trail and the Iowa Arboretum. Enjoy the vineyards and a tasting at Snus Hill Vineyard and Winery. LIVING IN NEVADA

History lives on in the town of Nevada. Named after the Sierra Nevada mountain range, the town was established in the 1850s and has had a post office in operation since 1854. The town is located just 10 miles east of Ames, offering easy access to entertainment. Locals enjoy the Historic Downtown District with a busy Main Street dotted with shops, restaurants, and a historic theatre. Go hiking, camping, kayaking, fishing, hunting and swimming at Hickory Grove Park. This small town is dedicated to creating a thriving, tight-knit community!

LIVING IN STORY CITY

The town of Story City shares its name with the county in which it's located, both of which are named after a Supreme Court Justice. This rural community is located just 14 miles north of Ames and its roots run deep. Established in the 1880s, its population is largely descended from the Scandinavian immigrants that settled in the area. This heritage is celebrated every year at the annual Scandinavian Days event. Other activities and attractions include "Iowa's largest antique mall north of Des Moines," the historic Swinging Bridge and the Bartlett Museum.
