Living in Fort Dodge.

History lives on in Fort Dodge!

The original fort was established in 1850 and the town was established not long after. Iowa's long history of being a major source of gypsum began in Fort Dodge with the establishment of major mines and mills. Fun fact: drywall was patented by a Fort Dodge resident.

Now, Fort Dodge is nicknamed "Little Chicago" because the buildings of Main Street were designed to resemble Chicago in the mid-1900s. Activities and attractions include the Fort Museum and Frontier Village with a full recreation of the original military fort and community.

The city also boasts a rich history of music and theater - hence the designation "Live Music Capital of Iowa." Residents enjoy an annual blues festival, annual rock concert, choral festivals, and more. You can also enjoy the productions of three different community theater organizations.

There is no shortage of culture and history in Fort Dodge!
